the problems with a stripe

you would never believe how tricky it is to print a stripe, particularly a four colour design like this one. fabric moves, stretches and shrinks. pattern cutters need their stripes all facing the same direction and preferably parallel. to print enough fabric to make this sample took a day, every thing is in the prep-work. and it looks so simple...

so exciting to be part of the louise gray show for s/s 2011, and of course proud of the amazing prints. my favorites are the tasseled harnesses and bleached out three colour repeats. here are the show pieces all hand printed by us in london:

a collaboration collection from Louise Gray and Smiley for s/s 2010. this was a great collection to be part of, something very different. straps, bomber jacket and skirt lining all printed with procion and devoré.

moore

i have just visited the henry moore exhibition at tate britain. this is mostley about his sculpture however the examples of his many drawings and primarily sketches are my favorite finds. these have great fluidity and an off beat use of colour and are as exciting as his 3D work. if you are a moore fan the perfect place to really see his work is at his former home where you can look around his studio and gardens. here they have beautiful examples of the textiles that moore designed in the 1940's for ascher ltd (see last two photos). very inspiring!

long hot summer

last summer i spent some time printing shoes for nicholas kirkwood. here is the result, a beautiful metallic foil print on goat skin suede:
